How Often Should You Have an Eye Test? 

Adults: every 2 years (or sooner if you notice changes in vision) 

Children: every year during school age 

Over 65: every year 

If you have diabetes, glaucoma, or a family history of eye disease: as recommended by your optometrist.

Common eye conditions

During your eye test, we don’t just check your prescription — we also look for signs of eye conditions that can affect your vision and overall health.

Conditions We Check For 

  • Short-sightedness (Myopia)
    Signs & Symptoms: Blurry distance vision, squinting, headaches.
    Treatment: Glasses, contact lenses, or laser surgery. 
  • Long-sightedness (Hyperopia)
    Signs & Symptoms: Blurry near vision, eyestrain, difficulty reading.
    Treatment: Glasses, contact lenses. 
  • Astigmatism
    Signs & Symptoms: Blurred or distorted vision at all distances, eye fatigue.
    Treatment: Glasses or contact lenses. 
  • Presbyopia
    Signs & Symptoms: Difficulty focusing on near objects, needing to hold reading material further away.
    Treatment: Reading glasses, multifocal glasses, or contact lenses. 
  • Glaucoma
    Signs & Symptoms: Often no early symptoms, later stages may cause tunnel vision or patchy vision loss.
    Treatment: Prescription eye drops, laser therapy, or surgery (early detection is key). 
  • Macular Degeneration
    Signs & Symptoms: Blurred central vision, difficulty reading, straight lines appearing wavy.
    Treatment: No cure, but lifestyle changes, supplements, and specialist treatments may slow progression. 
  • Cataracts
    Signs & Symptoms: Cloudy or hazy vision, glare, faded colours.
    Treatment: Surgery to replace the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one. 
  • Diabetic Retinopathy
    Signs & Symptoms: Blurred vision, floaters, vision loss (often no early warning signs).
    Treatment: Regular monitoring, laser treatment, injections, or surgery if advanced. 
  • Dry Eye Syndrome
    Signs & Symptoms: Stinging, burning, gritty feeling, watery eyes, fluctuating vision. Treatment: Lubricating eye drops, lifestyle adjustments, in-practice treatments.
